Our Bureau, New DelhiTHE Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced a new Kind of Business for Ayurveda Aahara under FoSCoS for the purpose of licensing and registration.Operational from September 1, 2025, the food authority has introduced the food category %u2018102-Ayurveda Aahara%u2019 having 4 sub categories based on specific mandatory documents, or approval letter related to product/claim.These categories include 102.1 Ayurveda Aahara category A wherein (i)Food Business Operator has the option to select product from the standardised list and no additional document is required, (ii) Approval letter issued from FSSAI (HQ), in case of claims related to Disease Risk Reduction.The other categories are 102.2 Category B wherein Product Approval letter issued from FSSAI (HQ) and 102.3 Category B1 and 102.4 Category B2 with similarrequirements.FSSAl on May 5, 2022, notified standards for Ayurveda Aahara under the Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations, 2022. Subsequently, lists of Ayurveda Aahara have also been uploaded on FSSAl website.%u201cHowever, there was no provision available under FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System) for issuance of licence/registration for Ayurveda Aahara and therefore, It has been decided to introduce a new Kind of Business in FoSCoS for Ayurveda Aahara,%u201d said Dr. Satyen Kumar Panda, Executive Director, Regulatory and Compliance Division, FSSAI.The eligibility would be for Central licence with annual fee of Rs. 7500 +GST.According to the definition, %u201dAyurveda Aahara%u201d means a food prepared in accordance with the recipes or ingredients or processes as per method described in the authoritative books of Ayurveda listed under %u201cSchedule A%u2019 of FSS Regulations including products which have other botanical ingredients in accordance with the concept of Ayurveda Aahara but does not include Ayurvedic drugs or proprietary Ayurvedic medicines and medicinal products, cosmetics, narcotic or psychotropic substances, herbs listed under Schedule E-l of Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, metals based Ayurvedic drugs or medicines, bhasma or pishti and any other ingredients notified by the Authority.R.N.I.
